Newly released images from leaker Kosutami reveal that Apple once experimented with colorful designs for its first-generation AirPods, specifically in bright pink and yellow. These prototypes featured colored outer shells for the charging case, while the earbuds and the interior remained white. The colors resemble those of the iPhone 5c, suggesting that Apple considered a more vibrant aesthetic during the development phase, which contrasts with the iconic all-white design they ultimately chose. This isn't the first indication of Apple's exploration into colorful AirPods. In 2023, Kosutami shared images of pink prototypes linked to the iPhone 7, which also never reached the market. The existence of these physical prototypes implies that Apple was seriously considering different color options, rather than just viewing them as a novelty or accessory. Many AirPods users have expressed a desire for more color choices to match their personal style, highlighting a gap between consumer expectations and Apple's design philosophy. Currently, the AirPods Max are the only model with color variations, such as Space Gray and Sky Blue. The standard AirPods and AirPods Pro have remained white throughout their generations, which maintains brand recognition but limits individual expression. Although these leaked prototypes don't indicate an imminent release of colorful AirPods, they show that Apple has revisited this idea multiple times.
