Seven chairs of UK parliamentary committees have urged the government to ban cryptocurrency donations to political parties. They argue that such donations threaten transparency and could expose the political system to foreign interference. The Electoral Commission has echoed these concerns, noting that current technology complicates the management of these risks. This push for a ban pressures the Labour government, which has been considering restrictions since mid-2025. Although ministers recognize the electoral integrity risks associated with crypto donations, implementing a ban may not be feasible in the upcoming Elections Bill. Meanwhile, the Reform UK party, led by Nigel Farage, accepted its first crypto donation in late 2025 and has advocated for a "crypto revolution" in British politics, which includes plans for a UK bitcoin reserve. The debate gained momentum after a December 2025 report revealed a significant £9 million ($12 million) donation to Reform UK from Christopher Harborne, a crypto investor linked to Tether. While this donation was in fiat currency, concerns arose over potential conflicts of interest due to Harborne's crypto wealth. As the UK works on its broader crypto regulatory framework, Parliament recently passed legislation recognizing digital assets as property, with a goal to regulate crypto similarly to traditional financial products by 2027.
