Claude Code version 2.1.20 replaced detailed file reads and search patterns with vague summary lines, frustrating users who want clear information. Despite user feedback demanding a toggle or a revert, the developers suggested using a cumbersome verbose mode instead. Many users are now sticking with the previous version while calling for a simple fix.

Version 2.1.20 of Claude Code introduced a significant change: it replaced detailed file operations and search patterns with vague summaries. Users now see statements like “Read 3 files” or “Searched for 1 pattern” without any specifics about which files or patterns are involved. This shift has drawn widespread criticism from users who feel that the tool has become less transparent and less useful, especially considering the $200 monthly subscription fee. Many have voiced their frustration in GitHub issues, calling for a return to the previous level of detail or at least a toggle option to regain those insights.
Anthropic, the company behind Claude Code, claims that the change simplifies the user experience by reducing noise. However, this feedback seems disconnected from the actual user experience, as most comments reflect dissatisfaction rather than support. When pressed for a solution, Anthropic suggested using "verbose mode," which ironically dumps excessive, unrelated information into the terminal instead of addressing the core request for file paths and patterns. Users have found the response frustrating, as their specific needs are not being met.
Instead of reverting to the previous version, the company has attempted to make verbose mode less overwhelming by stripping out some of the excessive output. This has not solved the underlying problem; users still face a barrage of text rather than clear, concise information. Those who relied on verbose mode for specific insights now have to take extra steps to retrieve the information they once had access to easily. Many users are sticking with the earlier version, 2.1.19, while a simple toggle for detailed output remains unimplemented.
