Microsoft is shifting its strategy by forming new partnerships with Nvidia and the AI startup Anthropic, signaling a move away from its reliance on OpenAI. The deal involves Microsoft investing up to $5 billion in Anthropic, while Nvidia will commit up to $10 billion. This investment has ballooned Anthropic's valuation from $183 billion in September to approximately $350 billion now. The startup is finalizing terms for its next funding round. Anthropic has pledged to buy $30 billion worth of Azure compute capacity from Microsoft and aims to acquire additional compute resources up to 1 gigawatt from both Microsoft and Nvidia. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Anthropic, emphasizing a focus on enhancing the performance of Anthropic's AI models. The two companies will work together on engineering and design to optimize these models for efficiency on Nvidia's hardware. Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives, is known for its Claude language models. Amazon Web Services has been its main cloud provider since 2023 and will continue in that role, along with being its primary training partner. Microsoft, which has invested heavily in OpenAI since 2019, holds a stake valued at $135 billion in the company, reflecting a significant portion of OpenAI's worth. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella highlighted the need for a collaborative approach in the AI industry, moving away from the notion of a single winner.
