OpenAI has disbanded its mission alignment team, which was formed in September 2024 to communicate the company’s mission and promote the safe development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). The team consisted of six or seven members, all of whom have been reassigned within the company to roles that involve similar work. Josh Achiam, the team’s former leader, has transitioned to the role of chief futurist, where he aims to study how AI and AGI will influence the world.
An OpenAI spokesperson attributed the disbanding to routine organizational changes typical in a fast-evolving company. This restructuring follows the previous dissolution of a “superalignment team” in 2024, which focused on long-term existential threats related to AI. Achiam’s personal website still lists him as the head of mission alignment, indicating some lingering connections to his former role, even as he steps into his new responsibilities alongside OpenAI physicist Jason Pruet.
