Shopify has launched a new feature allowing its merchants to sell products through AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity. This update, part of the winter 2023 edition of Shopify Editions, introduces "agentic storefronts," which enhance the existing AI assistant, Sidekick. Merchants can now set up their product pages to be recognized by these AI platforms, defining their schema and organizing products by various attributes, making it easier for customers to discover items during AI-driven searches.
The integration also enables AI agents to access merchants' policies and FAQs, providing customers with relevant answers and insights into trending search topics. Shopify will charge a small fee for purchases made through these AI channels, with the goal of improving user experience based on aspects like availability and price. Tobi LΓΌtke, Shopify's CEO, emphasized the company's commitment to making every store "agent-ready by default" to adapt to the rapidly changing shopping landscape.
Alongside agentic storefronts, Shopify has enhanced its Sidekick features. Merchants can now use natural language commands to modify their store design, receive personalized business advice through a feature called Pulse, and automate tasks more efficiently. In recent performance metrics, Shopify briefly became Canada's most valuable company in Q2 2025 and set a new record for Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, generating $14.6 billion USD in total sales, a 27% increase from the previous year.
