Coupang, South Korea's largest e-commerce platform, has confirmed a significant data breach affecting 33.7 million customer accounts. The breach, which was reported to authorities on November 18, exposed sensitive information including customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, shipping addresses, and some order histories. However, payment details and login credentials remain secure. The unauthorized access began on June 24 and is believed to have involved overseas servers.
In response to the breach, Coupang's CEO, Park Dae-jun, issued an apology for the inconvenience caused to customers. The South Korean government is now investigating whether Coupang violated personal information protection regulations. A former Chinese employee of Coupang is suspected to be involved in the incident, and police are currently conducting an investigation. The Korea Internet & Security Agency has issued a warning to those affected, advising them to be cautious of potential phishing scams in the aftermath of the breach.
