Instagram now allows users to customize their Reels feed by selecting topics they want to see more of. This feature, called 'Your Algorithm,' works alongside existing recommendations but gives users more control over their content. Users can update their preferences anytime, although they still can't reduce ads in their feed.
If you do, here's more
Instagram has introduced a significant update called ‘Your Algorithm’ that allows users to influence their Reels feed directly. This feature, which was initially tested last October, is now available to all English-speaking users. CEO Adam Mosseri announced the change, emphasizing that it gives users more control over the types of videos they see. Within the Reels tab, users can now add or remove topics based on their interests and even select their top three preferences for 2026.
While ‘Your Algorithm’ enhances user control, it doesn’t completely replace Instagram’s existing recommendation systems. The app will still analyze user behavior, such as what they watch, like, and skip. However, the new feature allows users to express their interests explicitly, which should simplify the process of curating their feed without having to constantly select “Not Interested” on unwanted posts. Users can adjust their preferences anytime, not just during the initial setup phase.
There are limitations. For instance, users cannot reduce the number of ads they see by adding “ads” to their preferences, as the app returns an error for such requests. In contrast, broader categories like “sponsored content” can be included. The feature is part of Instagram's ongoing efforts to refine user interaction with content, which includes improvements like a watch history feature and enhanced editing tools for creators. This update aims to make the Reels experience more user-centric, though its effectiveness in improving content quality remains to be seen.
