Canva has launched a new design model that enhances its platform by generating designs with editable layers instead of just flat images. This model is trained on Canva’s design elements, allowing it to work across various formats like social media posts, presentations, and websites. Robert Kawalsky, Canva’s global head of product, emphasized that users want the flexibility to start with a prompt and then refine their designs directly.
In addition to the design model, Canva has expanded its AI capabilities. The AI assistant, initially introduced earlier this year, now integrates throughout the platform. Users can tag the bot in comments for suggestions while collaborating on projects. The AI can also generate 3D objects and replicate art styles, making it more versatile for users. Canva has also introduced a spreadsheet tool that connects with its app-building feature, enabling users to create data visualization widgets.
Canva has further enhanced its offerings by launching Canva Grow, a marketing platform that combines asset creation with performance analytics. This platform allows marketers to publish ads directly on social media channels like Meta. The company has also added form creation features for collecting client responses, competing with services like Google Forms. A recent acquisition of the ad analytics firm MagicBrief supports these new capabilities.
In a bid to compete with Adobe, Canva previously acquired the professional design suite Affinity and has made it free for users. The integration of Affinity with Canva will allow designers to work across both platforms seamlessly, creating a more cohesive design experience. This includes a redesigned interface that merges vector, pixel, and layout tools, along with access to Canva AI for generating images within Affinity.
