Microsoft issued out-of-band updates to fix two critical issues affecting Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server. One problem disrupts remote desktop access to Microsoft 365 Cloud PC sessions, while the other prevents some Windows 11 devices with Secure Launch from shutting down or hibernating.

Microsoft has issued emergency updates for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server to resolve two significant issues stemming from the January Patch Tuesday updates. The first problem affects users trying to connect to Microsoft 365 Cloud PC sessions. After installing the January 2026 security updates, some users may face credential prompt failures in remote desktop applications, including the Windows App on client devices and Azure Virtual Desktop.
The second issue specifically impacts Windows 11 version 23H2, where devices with Secure Launch enabled cannot shut down or enter hibernation. Instead, these devices restart unexpectedly after installation of the January 13 updates. Microsoft has suggested a workaround for this shutdown issue by using the command `shutdown /s /t 0`.
To address these problems, Microsoft released several out-of-band updates. These include updates for various Windows Server and Windows 11 versions aimed at restoring remote desktop functionality and fixing shutdown issues. Importantly, these updates are not available through Windows Update and must be manually downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog. For organizations that cannot install the updates immediately, Microsoft provides a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) option via Group Policy to mitigate the remote desktop issue. If devices are not affected by these issues, thereβs no need to rush the updates, as fixes will be included in the upcoming regular update schedule.
