Bill Hill, co-founder of the Bitcoin mixing tool Samourai Wallet, was sentenced to four years in prison for operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. At 67 years old, Hill's age and a recent autism diagnosis influenced the judge’s decision to reduce his sentence from the maximum of five years. U.S. District Judge Denise Cote noted that Hill's time in prison would be particularly challenging due to his age and condition, stating she would have imposed a longer sentence if not for these factors.
Hill, along with co-developer Keonne Rodriguez, pleaded guilty to charges related to their roles in the wallet, which prosecutors say facilitated the laundering of over $237 million in illicit funds. Hill's attorney argued that his autism contributed to his belief that his actions were legal, claiming that Hill viewed the regulatory landscape around non-custodial wallets as a “forcefield.” During sentencing, Hill expressed regret, acknowledging that he had rationalized his actions and took full responsibility for his conduct. In addition to prison time, he received three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine, with the possibility of reduced prison time for prior detention in Portugal. Hill must report to prison by January 2, 2026.
