Tesla's 2025 Holiday update introduces a new feature called "Grok with Navigation Commands," allowing drivers to use voice commands to add and modify navigation routes. In a demonstration video, Grok successfully creates a route through San Francisco, which raises questions about its reliability given Grok's history of errors. The chatbot has previously generated bizarre false news stories and has had controversial interactions, including making offensive statements after Elon Musk's intervention to address user complaints about its political bias.
While Grok's navigation might prove useful, its track record casts doubt on how well it will function in real driving scenarios. Traditional GPS systems also make mistakes; for instance, in 2019, drivers in Denver followed Google Maps onto a muddy road and got stuck. More seriously, incorrect directions have led to fatal accidents, like when three men drove off an unfinished bridge in India. Given these issues, combining Grok navigation with Tesla's "Full Self-Driving" feature seems risky.
The update includes other features as well. A new Dog Mode lets users monitor pets left in the car with live temperature updates and snapshots. Tesla has also introduced a whimsical Santa Mode that transforms the car's dashboard display into a festive sleigh scene. Another practical addition is a chime that alerts drivers if they leave their phone inside the car after closing a door, ensuring they don't accidentally leave it behind.
