Microsoft Azure faced a significant outage affecting its cloud services just a week after AWS experienced similar issues. The problems hit various Microsoft platforms, including Microsoft 365, Xbox, and Minecraft. Other companies relying on Azure, such as Capital One, Alaska Airlines, and Starbucks, also reported disruptions. Microsoft attributed the outage to an “inadvertent configuration change” and DNS issues, which caused latency, timeouts, and errors for users.
The outage began around 4 PM UTC on October 29, 2025, and impacted many Azure services, including Azure SQL Database, Azure Active Directory, and Azure Virtual Desktop. By 7:40 PM ET, Microsoft indicated that the Azure Front Door (AFD) service was recovering, achieving over 98% availability. While most customers saw improvements, full mitigation was expected by 12:40 AM UTC on October 30, 2025. Xbox services reportedly recovered to normal, although some users needed to restart their consoles to connect.
Microsoft 365’s status account acknowledged ongoing issues and revealed that parts of its internal infrastructure were experiencing connectivity problems. Customers faced challenges accessing services and the admin center. Airlines like Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines warned customers of disruptions to their systems, advising them to seek assistance at airports. Other businesses, including Kroger and Community Fibre, also noted service interruptions linked to the Azure outage.
