Target Corporation is facing a serious security incident after hackers claimed to have stolen a significant portion of its internal source code. The attackers uploaded samples of the alleged stolen code to Gitea, a self-hosted Git service, and presented these as a preview of a larger dataset for sale. The sample included a file named SALE.MD that listed tens of thousands of files and directories, suggesting a total archive size of about 860 GB.
Following inquiries from BleepingComputer, Target's Git server became inaccessible from the internet, and all related repositories on Gitea were removed. Before the takedown, the repositories referenced internal Target development servers and included the names of current engineers, raising concerns about the authenticity of the data. Although BleepingComputer has not confirmed the breach, the details of the directory structure and the internal references align with what would be expected from Target's private development environment. This incident echoes Target's 2013 security breach, which exposed the payment card data of 110 million customers.
