The Subtle Voicebuds are AI-powered earbuds designed to transcribe speech in quiet or noisy environments. Subtle has introduced Voicebuds, a new pair of wireless earbuds designed to improve voice dictation in both quiet and noisy environments. They utilize a custom AI model that allows users to dictate text even at a whisper or amidst loud surroundings, such as the CES show floor. This technology aims to solve the common annoyance of speaking loudly to virtual assistants in public spaces. At $199, Voicebuds are competitively priced against the AirPods Pro 3, which they claim have five times fewer transcription errors than Apple's offering.
Voicebuds come with a year of access to Subtle's iOS app, which includes premium features like instant dictation and note transcription without needing to look at your phone. After the first year, users will face a subscription fee of $17 per month. While they support standard headphone functions like taking calls and listening to audio, they also include features such as active noise cancellation and a multi-mic array. However, there are concerns about matching the audio quality and ANC performance of established brands like Apple and Sony.
In testing, the Voicebuds performed well, accurately dictating sentences at normal speaking volume even in chaotic environments. Subtle's CEO, Tyler Chen, demonstrated the device's capabilities by dictating while barely whispering, showcasing its effectiveness in quiet settings. While the earbuds don’t support Apple’s “Hey, Siri” command due to hardware limitations, Subtle plans to integrate its own AI assistant. If the transcription accuracy lives up to the company's claims, these earbuds could become a serious alternative for those heavily reliant on voice commands.
