Google has announced that Android's Quick Share now works seamlessly with Apple's AirDrop, allowing users to transfer files directly between Android and Apple devices. To initiate sharing, Apple devices must have AirDrop's "Everyone for 10 minutes" mode enabled. Once activated, both Android and Apple devices will show up in each other's sharing interfaces, facilitating easy transfer of photos, videos, and other files. This feature operates on a peer-to-peer basis, meaning data doesn't pass through servers, ensuring privacy and security. Google didn't collaborate with Apple for this feature, instead developing its own version of interoperability. The company expressed interest in further cooperation with Apple, particularly for an upcoming "Contacts Only" mode. To use Quick Share, Pixel 10 users must update their settings, which involves several steps in the Settings app. Google emphasizes a robust security framework for this feature, utilizing Rust programming to protect against common vulnerabilities. Built-in protections from both Android and iOS enhance security, and users maintain control over what files they accept. The Quick Share-AirDrop feature is currently exclusive to the Pixel 10 series but will expand to other Android devices in the future. Google conducted extensive security testing, including independent assessments by NetSPI, which confirmed that the implementation is secure and more robust than other solutions in the market. This development aims to improve cross-platform communication, making it easier for users to share files regardless of their device type.
