Waymo is expanding its autonomous fleet with the introduction of the Waymo Ojai, an electric van built by the Chinese automaker Zeekr. This new model will join Waymo's existing Jaguar I-Paces as the company increases its presence in more U.S. cities. The Ojai features a robust suite of technology with 13 cameras, six radar sensors, and four lidar sensors, all equipped with heating elements and wipers to handle various weather conditions — a necessary upgrade as Waymo plans to venture into colder regions. The Ojai is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor producing 268 horsepower, paired with a 93-kWh battery. Although no range figures have been officially released, the design includes an 800-volt electrical architecture for faster charging compared to the I-Pace. Waymo has confirmed that the Ojai’s body is constructed in China, but U.S. regulations regarding Chinese vehicles won’t impact its deployment. Alongside the Ojai, Waymo will also incorporate modified Hyundai Ioniq 5s into its fleet, ensuring a mix of vehicles as it continues to grow.
