BridgePay Network Solutions, a significant U.S. payment gateway provider, experienced a ransomware attack that knocked key systems offline, causing a nationwide service outage. The disruption began early Friday and escalated quickly, impacting various merchants and organizations across the country. BridgePay confirmed the cyberattack on the same day, and by February 6, they announced they were working with federal law enforcement, including the FBI, and external recovery teams.
Merchants reported they could only accept cash due to the outage. For instance, a restaurant informed customers about a cybersecurity breach affecting credit card processing. The City of Palm Bay, Florida, also announced that its online billing portal was down due to the BridgePay disruption, advising residents to make payments in person or by phone. Other organizations, such as Lightspeed Commerce and ThriftTrac, faced similar issues related to the outage.
The attack affected several core services, including the BridgePay Gateway API and MyBridgePay virtual terminal. Monitoring systems first detected degraded performance around 3:29 a.m., which eventually led to a complete outage. Although BridgePay stated that initial forensic findings showed no payment card data was compromised, the incident highlights the vulnerabilities in payment infrastructure as ransomware attacks increasingly disrupt real-world commerce. Recovery efforts are ongoing, and the company is handling the situation with a focus on security and thorough investigation.
