People People, a Seattle-based design studio, created a flexible branding system for Smål Market, a new retail incubator in Ballard. This collective includes six small businesses that share costs and space while maintaining their unique identities. The branding challenge was to unify these distinct brands without overshadowing them, a departure from typical retail environments that often prioritize a single dominant identity.
The name "Smål" reflects Ballard’s Scandinavian heritage and emphasizes the market's purpose of supporting small businesses. The design features a geometric logo and a restrained color palette of charcoal, cream, clay, and periwinkle, rooted in Scandinavian design principles. This branding allows each merchant, such as Ruby Laine Apparel and Noir Lux Candle Bar, to express their individuality while still fitting within the overall Smål ecosystem.
The project also highlights a different client-designer dynamic, as Ballard Alliance operates as a community organization rather than a profit-driven developer. Their approach focuses on fostering a welcoming environment for emerging entrepreneurs, emphasizing community over individual consumption.
