OpenAI is acquiring the team behind Convogo, a platform designed to assist executive coaches and HR teams with automating leadership assessments and feedback reporting. The acquisition, described as an all-stock deal, focuses on bringing the co-founders — Matt Cooper, Evan Cater, and Mike Gillett — into OpenAI's fold rather than acquiring Convogo's technology or intellectual property. Convogo's product will be shut down as part of this transition. Convogo originated from a hackathon idea inspired by a question from Cooper's mother, an executive coach. She sought a way to reduce the time spent on report writing, allowing more focus on direct coaching. Over two years, Convogo gained traction, reportedly helping thousands of coaches and collaborating with top leadership development firms. The founders expressed that their work revealed a significant challenge: connecting AI advancements with practical applications in the coaching field. This acquisition is OpenAI's ninth in a year, reflecting the company's strategy of using mergers and acquisitions to enhance its talent and capabilities. Most of its prior acquisitions have resulted in either product integration or complete shutdowns, with the notable exception of its ongoing collaboration with Jonny Ive's io Products. This approach positions OpenAI to strengthen its AI offerings and maintain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
