The GenAI Chatbot app market has surged by 152% year-over-year since January 2025. Google’s Gemini has significantly increased its share from 14.7% to 25.2% within a year, while ChatGPT has seen a notable decline from 69.1% to 45.3%. This shift reflects the entrance of new competitors into the space, making ChatGPT's loss of market share understandable. Grok has also made strides, achieving a daily active user (DAU) market share of 15.2%, up from 12% in December 2025.
Despite overall growth in technology, the adoption of GenAI chatbots remains relatively low. Many users have yet to interact with these apps, especially those outside the tech industry. However, there’s a growing trend of users engaging with multiple AI applications, with about 20% of AI users tapping into at least two different apps. This suggests that individuals are not just testing out AI tools but are starting to incorporate them into their daily routines for specific tasks.
Tom Grant, VP of Research at Apptopia, notes that while ChatGPT pioneered the category, its decline in dominance is leading users to diversify their toolsets. He likens the evolving market dynamics to the streaming industry, where a few big players dominate, but smaller companies thrive by carving out niches. In terms of user engagement, Claude leads with an average time spent per DAU of 34.7 minutes, even with a slight drop in January. ChatGPT and Microsoft CoPilot follow, with CoPilot boasting a respectable 27.2 minutes per DAU, indicative of its growing user base and engagement.
