Nvidia and TSMC are seeing modest gains in premarket trading as reports emerge that Nvidia has requested increased production of its H200 AI chips from TSMC. This follows a statement from former US President Donald Trump, indicating that Nvidia could export high-performing processors from its Hopper series to China, with a significant portion of sales revenue directed to the US government. Chinese companies have already ordered over 2 million chips for 2026, significantly exceeding Nvidia's current inventory of 700,000 units.
Nvidia plans to price these chips at about $27,000 each, potentially generating over $54 billion in revenue if it can meet the demand. However, this hinges on approval from Chinese regulators, especially since Nvidia faced barriers in the Chinese AI market in 2025. The company aims to start shipments to China before the Lunar New Year in February 2026, with high expectations from Chinese firms for these advanced chips.
During a recent Q3 conference call, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang expressed confidence in meeting future GPU demand, noting significant supply arrangements. His relationship with TSMC appears strong, aided by personal interactions during his visit to Taiwan, where he praised TSMC's leadership in the industry.
