Apple is experiencing a significant loss of talent in its artificial intelligence and Siri teams, according to a report from Bloomberg. Recently, at least four AI researchers departed, along with a senior executive from the Siri division. The researchers heading to companies like Meta and Google DeepMind include Yinfei Yang, who plans to start a new venture, and Haoxuan You and Bailin Wang, both of whom joined Meta's Superintelligence research arm and recommendation systems, respectively. Zirui Wang is moving to Google DeepMind, which is ironically developing the AI models that Apple plans to use for an upgraded Siri.
Stuart Bowers, a key figure in Apple’s Siri team and previously involved in the company’s self-driving car project, has also left for Google DeepMind. Bowers was one of Apple’s senior executives working on Siri and reported directly to Siri chief Mike Rockwell. His departure is notable since he will contribute to the Gemini models for the new version of Siri that Apple is set to launch this year.
The shifts in Apple's AI and Siri teams come amid a year marked by significant reorganization. John Giannandrea, who held the position of Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, stepped down in December but will remain as an advisor until spring 2026 before retiring. These changes highlight ongoing challenges within Apple's AI initiatives and raise questions about the company's ability to retain critical talent in a competitive landscape.
