As of January 7, 2026, Threads recorded 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android, while X had 125 million. Despite X's ongoing controversies, particularly involving its AI, Grok, which has faced scrutiny for generating non-consensual deepfake images, Threads' growth seems tied to Meta’s broader strategy. Cross-promotions through Facebook and Instagram, along with an emphasis on creator engagement and a steady rollout of new features, have likely fueled this increase. Over the past year, Threads added features like interest-based communities, better filters, direct messaging, long-form text, and even disappearing posts. Recently, the app has started testing games, enhancing its appeal. Although Threads is gaining traction on mobile, X still leads in web usage, attracting around 145.4 million daily visits compared to Threads' 8.5 million. The gap in user engagement on mobile is narrowing, especially in the U.S., where X's user base has halved in the past year.
