TikTok is launching a new feature called Nearby Feed, designed to highlight content from local creators. Users will see posts that reflect their immediate surroundings, rather than content from distant locations. The idea is to connect users with creators and trends in their area, making the app feel more relevant and personalized. For instance, instead of seeing a food review from across the country, users will get recommendations and insights from local spots. The Nearby Feed will be accessible via a tab on the home screen, maintaining TikTok's original feed while introducing this localized experience. However, there are restrictions. Users under 18, those with private accounts, or those who limit their post visibility won’t have access to this feature. Additionally, content must be posted by users over 18 and cannot be older than 90 days to appear in the Nearby Feed. Currently, this feature is being tested in select countries, including France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, with potential for broader rollout depending on user response. This feature comes at a time when TikTok is negotiating a deal with the US government to license its algorithm. This move aims to protect user data and could indicate how localized content might evolve under new regulatory frameworks.
