World Labs, founded by AI expert Fei-Fei Li, has launched Marble, its first commercial world model product. Marble allows users to transform text prompts, images, videos, and 3D layouts into editable 3D environments. This comes after a year of significant funding, totaling $230 million, and positions World Labs ahead of its competitors. Unlike other models that generate environments on-the-fly, Marble creates persistent, downloadable 3D spaces, which reduces inconsistencies and enables exports in various formats like meshes and videos. Marble introduces AI-native editing tools, allowing users to manipulate spatial structures before the AI fills in visual details. The editing features include the ability to upload multiple images or short clips for a more comprehensive view, and an experimental editor named Chisel that lets users block out layouts and add prompts for specific styles. Users can also expand generated worlds and combine multiple environments through a “composer mode.” Subscription options range from a free tier with limited generations to a $95/month plan that unlocks all features. In gaming and visual effects, Marble aims to provide assets that enhance existing pipelines rather than replace them. While some developers express concerns about AI's impact on quality and intellectual property, Johnson believes Marble can improve background environments and support VR applications. The product is compatible with major VR headsets and offers potential in robotics by simulating training environments. Fei-Fei Li envisions Marble as a step towards achieving advanced spatial intelligence, which could lead to significant advancements in various fields beyond gaming and robotics.
