Google has launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard designed to streamline AI agent-based shopping. Unveiled at the National Retail Federation conference, this protocol works in tandem with major companies like Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart. It allows AI agents to assist throughout various stages of the buying process, from product discovery to post-purchase support, without needing separate connections for different agents.
The UCP will soon be implemented in Google’s product listings and the Gemini apps, enabling shoppers to check out directly from U.S. retailers while researching items. Users can pay using Google Pay and utilize shipping information saved in Google Wallet. Google also plans to incorporate PayPal as a payment option. Shopify's CEO highlighted the protocol's ability to connect users with products they might not have otherwise found, emphasizing its potential to enhance the shopping experience.
In addition to UCP, Google is enhancing its Merchant Center with new data attributes to improve item visibility in AI search results. Companies like PayPal and OpenAI are also working on tools to make sellers more discoverable in AI chatbot interactions. Google is allowing merchants to integrate branded AI-powered Business Agents in Google Search, with early adopters including Lowe’s and Reebok.
