A group of individuals has filed a class action lawsuit against xAI, the parent company of the Grok AI chatbot, claiming that it generates nonconsensual nude deepfakes that exploit women and girls. The lawsuit, submitted on January 23 in Northern California, alleges that xAI executives were aware of Grok's capability to create explicit images but chose not to implement necessary safeguards. Instead, they allegedly sought to profit from the demand for humiliating images. The plaintiffs, represented anonymously as βJane Doe,β argue that these actions have caused significant harm to thousands of women, exposing them to potential reputational damage.
The lawsuit cites alarming statistics, stating that Grok produced 4.4 million images in just nine days, with at least 1.8 million being sexualized deepfakes of women. Another analysis suggests the number could be as high as three million, affecting various demographics, including men and children. The suit points out that xAI encouraged users to create such content through features that made it easy to manipulate images by tagging individuals, highlighting a "spicy" option for generating controversial content, and lacking any filtering against sexualized requests.
Elon Muskβs involvement has intensified the backlash. He once prompted Grok to generate a bikini photo of himself, later limiting the feature to paying subscribers amid growing criticism. Musk has denied any wrongdoing, claiming he was unaware of illegal content generated by Grok, though experts warn that the AIβs capabilities could violate numerous laws related to sexualized deepfakes and child sexual abuse material. The lawsuit comes amid broader scrutiny, with investigations launched by multiple countries and states expressing serious concern over the potential for abuse linked to Grok, emphasizing the urgency for xAI to address these issues.
