Uber is set to launch autonomous taxi services in San Francisco by late 2026, marking the Bay Area as its initial market for this venture. The company is developing a robotaxi in collaboration with Lucid Motors, which will be based on the Lucid Gravity SUV, and self-driving tech firm Nuro. Currently, Lucid has delivered test vehicles to Nuro, and Uber plans to have 100 test vehicles on the road soon. Over the next six years, Uber aims to roll out more than 20,000 of these vehicles in various locations, accessible via the Uber app. In addition to its partnership with Lucid and Nuro, Uber is working with Nvidia and Stellantis. Stellantis plans to start production of at least 5,000 autonomous vehicles using Nvidia's software by 2028. Recently, Uber has also begun offering autonomous rides in Saudi Arabia through a partnership with WeRide, a Chinese tech company, and has similar operations in Abu Dhabi. While autonomous taxis are not new, Uber's commitment to them is notable given its scale, operating in 15,000 cities across over 70 countries. Waymo, a competitor owned by Alphabet, has been testing its own autonomous taxi services for several years, currently available in cities like Phoenix and San Francisco. Waymo plans to expand to London in 2024 and is working with Uber on autonomous services in Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta. This competitive landscape highlights the growing interest and investment in autonomous vehicle technology within the ride-hailing sector.
