NVIDIA is acquiring Hugging Face for roughly $13 billion. The deal keeps Hugging Face operating as a neutral platform where developers can choose any models, frameworks, clouds, and hardware they want. NVIDIA's compute won't be required to build or deploy through the platform. The acquisition hinges on NVIDIA's public commitment to open-source AI. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang co-authored a recent industry letter arguing that open-weight models distribute AI leadership across companies and institutions rather than concentrating it. He frames this as essential for startups, universities, and smaller organizations to build advanced AI without training models from scratch. NVIDIA has already contributed over 500 models and 250 datasets to Hugging Face and claims to be the platform's largest contributor of open models and data. NVIDIA says the deal strengthens Hugging Face's infrastructure, safety features, and deployment capabilities while preserving its open ecosystem. The company emphasizes that Hugging Face will keep supporting multi-cloud, multi-accelerator development—developers won't be locked into NVIDIA hardware. Hugging Face's founders (Clem Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf) apparently approached NVIDIA about the acquisition, seeing it as the right home for the next phase of the platform.
