Beijing has deliberately positioned itself as a responsible steward rather than a reckless competitor, and several China experts told him Xi Jinping's recent AI speeches are more technically nuanced than Western observers typically assume.
The real insight emerged in the details. Xiaomi transformed from a phone maker into one of China's largest EV manufacturers in just a few years, something Apple abandoned after years of effort. Huawei filled its flagship store with electric vehicles where an Apple Store would have a Genius Bar. Saft watched robots assemble cars on assembly lines that looked like theme park attractions. These weren't futuristic concepts—they were companies actually doing the work of embedding AI into everyday infrastructure faster than their American counterparts. If embodied AI and physical-world integration matter more than owning the frontier model, then China's constraint from chip restrictions may have accidentally become its strategy.
